Post-Conference Reykjavik Itinerary

Monday, August 29

After our Main Conference closing circle we will board our coach with a boxed lunch and begin our journey to Reykholt, home of the 13th century scholar and writer Snorri Sturluson. Here we will visit a museum dedicated to this greatest of Iceland’s Eddas writers as our guide, Valgerður Bjarnadóttir, shares some of these sagas with us. We then continue on to the Reykjavik Lights Hotel where we will stay for the duration of our trip, enjoying our first night’s dinner together near our hotel.

Tuesday, August 30

After breakfast at our hotel, we will visit Skálholt, the political and spiritual capital of Iceland for many years. We’ll have some time at the Njáls Saga Centre in Hvolsvollur, with its replica of a Viking Hall, its tapestries, and its insight into Viking navigation, cosmology, ocean travel, religion and literary art.  We then travel onto nearby Stöng to explore an artful recreation of an Icelandic chieftain’s majestic dwelling from the Age of Settlement, before returning to Reykjavik for dinner and an evening enjoying the city’s vibrant arts scene.

Wednesday, August 31

After breakfast at our hotel, we will head to Hofsstadir to see the turf-walled remains of a traditional Viking longhouse, and then make the trip to the old harbor town of Hafnarfjörður. Here, we will visit its lovely lava park and garden, and take a guided elf walk with Seer and Artist Ragnhildur Jónsdóttir. We then return to Reykjavik to visit museums and art galleries. Our final dinner will be enjoyed together in Reykjavik.

Thursday, September 1

We will have breakfast at our hotel and check out. Participants will be able to use Reykjavik’s convenient public transport to make their way to the airport for flights home.
