August 22-27, 2019

Post-Conference Bulgaria Itinerary

Our journey through Bulgaria offers us five nights traveling through the ancient world of the Thracian mysteries in the Rhodope Mountains to the golden sands and former Greek colonies along the Black Sea.

Tuesday, August 27, 2019
We depart Plovdiv by coach at the end of our Main Conference, just after lunch, driving south through the mystical Rhodope Mountains to visit the Orphic Caves. Afterward, we leave for the nearby spa town of Devin where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Wednesday, August 28, 2019
Today we explore some of Bulgaria’s most impressive megalithic archaeological sites. We leave our hotel after breakfast for the drive to Tatul for a tour and meditation at this  Thracian sanctuary. We will enjoy a packed lunch as we next make our way to Perperikon, an ancient Thracian city located in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains and the largest archaeological site in the Balkans. We will continue to our hotel in the peaceful village of Glavatartsi, overlooking the waters of the Kardzhali Reservoir, for dinner and our overnight.

Thursday, August 29, 2019
After breakfast at our hotel, we will continue our drive through the countryside towards the Black Sea coast. Along the way, we tour the megalithic site of Beglic Tas, dating back to the Iron Age, and enjoy a packed lunch. We then travel on to the elegant and ancient town of Nessebar, right on the Black Sea, where we check-in to our hotel for dinner and the night.

Friday, August 30, 2019
Our morning will be open to independently explore the cobblestoned streets and Byzantine ruins of Nessebar. Participants will have breakfast at our hotel and lunch on their own, and be provided with suggestions for the day - including directions to the beach. We depart Nessebar after lunch and to travel to the medieval cave monastery of Aladhza, and then continue on to the port city of Varna, in Northeastern Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast. We’ll check-in to the hotel where we will spend the following two nights, and walk a short distance to enjoy dinner in a nearby winery.

Saturday, August 31, 2019
After breakfast at our hotel, we will meet for a late morning visit to Varna’s splendid Roman Baths. Participants again will enjoy lunch on their own, and have a free afternoon to explore Varna’s museums, galleries, shopping or magnificent beach. We will meet later that evening as group for a farewell dinner featuring traditional Bulgarian cuisine.

Sunday, September 1, 2019
Our Post-Conference Journey concludes after breakfast at our hotel. Participants will make their own way to Varna’s airport for flights to their next destination.
